One night by the lake, two nights downtown

Both hotels include breakfast for everyone and will hold bags before check-in and after check-out. The Sunday-evening move is deliberate: it puts us four minutes from Pike Place Market for the last two days.

Flights, hotels and the two timed entries are fixed. Everything else is the intended order, with the walk, cab or train that connects each stop and what it costs for three. Off the plane and straight to the water

We land at 10:05, cab to the Holiday Inn Express and leave the bags. Instead of waiting around for rooms, a downhill walk to the Olympic Sculpture Park, Calder's red Eagle on the bluff over the Sound, then brunch at Tilikum Place Cafe and the walk up through the Amazon blocks to the Spheres. At 2:30 we're inside the domes, then twelve minutes west to Bumbershoot for the afternoon sets, dinner inside the lit-up Spheres, and either the headliner or an early night.

  7. Bumbershoot at Seattle Center. Doors opened at 12:30; three hours covers two sets and the arts programme. Saturday's bill is Lucy Dacus, Blood Orange, Bikini Kill and Chase & Status, with Turnstile closing the main stage; set times are in the festival app. The honest note: Sunday's bill, Death Cab for Cutie, De La Soul, Orville Peck and Noname, is the one built for three adults. If that matters more than Saturday's, buy Sunday passes instead and walk in from the Needle at 7. Screenshot the passes; cell service is patchy. International Fountain is the meeting point. Map

  8. Dinner at Willmott's Ghost. Renee Erickson's Roman-style pizza and small plates inside the lit-up Spheres, the only table in town under a rainforest. Toulouse Petit, eight minutes from the festival gate, for Creole in a candle-lit room if we'd rather stay near the stages. Map

  9. Headliner or early night. Wristbands are good all day and the main stages run until about 11, so the strong option is back in for the closing set and the light show on the Needle. The honest option: we have been up since 4:30 AM Phoenix time. Denny Park at dusk, with the Needle lit, is on the way back either way.

The day out of downtown

The one day we leave the centre. A car north to the Ballard Locks to watch boats lift and drop and salmon climb the ladder past underwater windows, a flat walk along the water to lunch at Ray's Café with the Sound out of the window, forty minutes on the sand at Golden Gardens, then the skyline from Kite Hill at Gas Works Park and the Troll under the bridge on the way back. Two hours off at the hotel, an early dinner at How to Cook a Wolf on top of Queen Anne Hill, Kerry Park for sunset, and ice cream on the way down. Every stop is a park or a place that keeps its normal hours on the holiday; the ones that don't, Sushi Kashiba, Canlis, the Japanese Garden and the art museum, are why this is the plan.

Useful local notes

What the one‑page plan left out

The original itinerary has the bones. These are the details that change what we do: the holiday closures, the fare that went up, where the rideshares actually pick up, and what to order.

Labor Day changes less than it looks

  • MonEvery Monday stop is a park: the Locks, Golden Gardens, Gas Works, Kerry Park. No tickets, no holiday hours, nothing to confirm.
  • MonBallard's restaurants mostly open at 4 PM on Mondays, and Un Bien is shut. That's why lunch is at Ray's Café on the water at 11:30, with the Little Coney window at Golden Gardens as the quick option.
  • MonHow to Cook a Wolf, 5 Spot, Molly Moon's and Toulouse Petit keep normal hours on the holiday; so does the market. Closed on Labor Day: Sushi Kashiba, the Seattle Japanese Garden, the Volunteer Park Conservatory and the Seattle Art Museum, and Canlis is dark every Sunday and Monday. Rideshare prices spike around 5 PM; the plan rides up the hill just before it.
  • SunBumbershoot fences off Seattle Center on both days. The Armory food hall and the International Fountain need a wristband; the Space Needle, Chihuly and MoPOP keep their own street entrances on Broad Street and stay open as normal.

Getting around

  • RailLink is a flat $3 per adult since 2024; the $2.50 in the original plan is out of date. Riders 18 and under travel free.
  • PayTap a contactless card or phone at the platform reader, on and off, or use the Transit GO Ticket app.
  • SEAApp rides pick up on the 3rd floor of the parking garage, not the curb.
  • HillsQueen Anne Hill is 450 feet above downtown: ride up for dinner, ride down after dark. Monday's outing is otherwise flat; Tuesday is a boat and one uphill walk from the dock to the hotel.
  • FerryWalk-on ferry fares are $11.35 per adult (19 to 64) and $5.65 at 65 and over, charged leaving Seattle only; the ride back is free. Kiosks at Colman Dock, no booking, and foot passengers always get on.

Eat

  • SatTilikum Place Cafe Dutch babies, brunch by the Chief Seattle statue · Willmott's Ghost Roman pizza inside the Spheres · Toulouse Petit Creole near the festival gate
  • SunToulouse Petit brunch until 3, eight minutes from Chihuly · Serious Pie thin-crust pizza on Virginia St · Le Pichet French, 1st Ave, kitchen closes 9
  • MonRay's Café chowder and oysters with the Sound out of the window · Little Coney soft serve at Golden Gardens · How to Cook a Wolf hand-made pasta on top of Queen Anne · 5 Spot the walk-in fallback four blocks down · Molly Moon's salted caramel
  • TuePiroshky Piroshky smoked-salmon pâté · Daily Dozen mini doughnuts · Beecher's mac and cheese · Ghost Alley Espresso in Post Alley · Proper Fish British fish and chips in Winslow · Harbour Public House oysters over Eagle Harbor

For the coffee people: Victrola (310 E Pike) and Espresso Vivace on Broadway are the real Seattle coffee, a 15-minute climb from the hotel, if anyone would rather trade the ferry for Capitol Hill on Tuesday. Sushi Kashiba in the market, Shiro Kashiba's counter, is closed on Labor Day and Tuesdays; its Sunday 7 PM seating on OpenTable is the only way it fits. The Reserve Roastery on Pike closed in 2025. Skip the original Starbucks queue.

Views

  • SatOlympic Sculpture Park: Calder's red Eagle with the Needle behind it, the Sound below. Free, open until nine.
  • SunSpace Needle at 5:00, stay for the light. The Loupe is one level down by stairs.
  • MonKite Hill at Gas Works Park: the whole skyline across Lake Union, seaplanes landing in front of it. Free.
  • MonKerry Park on Queen Anne: the postcard, best just before sunset. Free.
  • TueThe stern of the 9:35 ferry: the whole skyline, the Needle and Rainier lined up behind the wake, for $11.35.

Pack for a Seattle September

  • WearLayers. Days near 72°F, evenings in the mid 50s. The Needle deck and Fog Room terrace are windy.
  • FeetComfortable shoes. Three to four miles a day, mostly flat; Golden Gardens is the only sand.
  • SunThe forecast is dry all four days, unusual here; a 20% shower chance on Saturday evening is the worst of it. Sunglasses for the Needle and the ferry deck, and a windproof layer for the boat.
  • BagSmall bag for Bumbershoot; the gate limits bag size. Leave the daypack at the hotel.

If it rains after all

  • SatThe Spheres and Bumbershoot's indoor stages at the Armory don't care about weather.
  • SunMuseum, Chihuly and the Needle's enclosed level are all indoors. Skip the outdoor deck.
  • MonThe locks and the fish-ladder windows work in rain; the beach doesn't. Swap Golden Gardens and Gas Works for MOHAI on Lake Union, open Mondays 10 to 5 with the Seattle story from Boeing to Amazon, and keep Kerry Park if the cloud lifts. The art museum is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
  • TueThe ferry sails in any weather and the cabin is warm; the market arcades are covered. Nothing changes.
